STUDIO QUE HAUNTS ARTOMATIC 419

The large, three-story former warehouse at 407 Washington Street in downtown Toledo is haunted. There's no other way to explain the whispering voices, pockets of temperature extremes and bizarre spots of light that have been experienced there. Is this actual paranormal activity, or simply the creaks and groans of a building built in 1887? It's up to you to find out.

Yes. You.

This is the premise of an interactive experience created by local art house Studio Que. It will be available to visitors of the upcoming three day art event Artomatic 419. After receiving the back story, "investigators" are provided a lead to follow. One clue leads to another, hidden in artist spaces throughout the building. There are puzzles to solve and evidence to gather, culminating in an important decision that lets visitors shape how the story will conclude. The "report" that participants submit at the end of their adventure acts not only as their vote on how to end the story, but also doubles as an entry form for a nightly drawing. Lucky winners will receive gift certificates to locally owned restaurants and shops, as well as artwork from artists in the show - all of which have been generously donated to support the event.

"I wanted to design an interactive experience that encourages visitors to explore some of the great artists participating in the show" says Ryan Forquer, who spearheaded this project. Forquer, who works full-time as a graphic designer, started his own small company, Studio Que, to release his personal art and music projects. He frequently works collaboratively in multi-media, and wanted to form Studio Que as a way to release projects involving multiple artists under one banner.

Artomatic 419 is the largest non-juried art show in Northwest Ohio. The bi-annual exhibition features all manner of expression from artists around the area. More than 5,000 people attended the event when it was last held in 2009. This year, the event has expanded to two buildings – 407 Washington and 25 S. St. Clair in downtown Toledo. It will take place on three consecutive Saturdays in April – the 2nd, 9th and 16th – from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. To participate in the interactive experience, visit the info tent located at the entrance to the building at 407 Washington.
